ADMIN NOTE - October 13, 2017 - TOP 10 THINGS I’VE LEARNED UPGRADING THE HUMOR LIST SITE

After updating over 1,000 pages on our website, I'd like to share a few of the things I’ve frequently corrected. First, consider that you are being immortalized (well, kinda) on the Internet! So, I've been doing what I can to make all the posts as Google worthy and consistent as possible - removing email addresses and server added computer language, adding appropriate labeling, correcting minor grammar and spelling errors, etc., etc. These are just a few tips I hope you'll find useful!

TOP 10 THINGS I’VE LEARNED UPGRADING THE HUMOR LIST SITE
10. Contributors love using !!!!!!, .........., !?!?!?!, and **** (myself included). Be conservative. They are not a natural, renewable resource. We'll miss them when we've used them all up. (Also, the **** tends to mess with the computer program Doug uses to process Humor List's statistics from the Digests.)

9. The most frequently missing labels are <adult>, <language>, <political>, and <news or political satire>. Imagine your minister, or worse your mom, was going to read your post. Some moms don't care, but speaking from experience, this mom appreciates your efforts to follow “The Rules”.

8. The contributor and title automatically get top billing on every post - adding the title and a signature line in the body of the text is not necessary (and ends up being deleted when posted on the website).

7. While just editing 2015, I found multiple jokes, repeated multiple times, by multiple contributors. Whether receiving the Digest or individual posts, contributors need to try and stay current on what's being posted by others. Imitation may be the ultimate sign of flattery, but really? Inspire to be unique - the world needs more niques!

6. Sharing emailed jokes received from friends or other humor groups is great - but filtering through the >>>'s, extra line breaks, and sender's email address, it’s likely to place your unread efforts into the "Deleted Folder" of your intended audience. Please - use your <Delete> key to edit before hitting the <Send> key to share.

5. Politics makes strange bedfellows, but not everyone prefers those sleeping arrangements. Humor is intended to make a person laugh or at least smile. If a post is more of an editorial opinion, slanderous, or contains unnecessary name-calling - then it's NOT funny and has no justification for being posted to this group. (I've already deleted several of these from the Archives - from both sides!)

4. The way the Archive is set up, there's a main "Index" page for each month, listing all the jokes by their titles. Most of the titles are creative and meaningful, but only after you've actually read the post. Try to give the potential reader a better idea what your post is actually about, so they want to read it. (i.e. "What's She Trying to Say?" vs "Top 10 Things I've Learned Upgrading The Humor List Site")

3. If you’ve actually read the whole thing (relatively easy compared to the years of posts I've read the past few months) and made it to this message - send me a personal reply (Please DO NOT "Reply to All")

2. There are three types of people in this world - those that can count and those that can't.

PS: Next week, I'll send a "Top 10 Warning Labels - What They Are And When To Use Them"
